Shearon Environmental Design was contracted by the 410 Front Street Homeowners Association (HOA) for the installation of a green roof system at their property in Philadelphia. This project was part of an overall improvement plan aimed at repairing some leaks that were throughout the building’s roof. The proposed scope of work covered removing and replacing the existing green roof from the eastern portion of the building including the common patio space, and private residential areas.
The green roof design was based on plans prepared by Shearon Environmental Design, with tray layout guidance provided by Weston Solutions and coordination with the Philadelphia Water Department. A key feature of this project was the use of the Green-Grid tray system, a modular green roof solution designed for quick installation and adaptability. The installation included multiple components, such as tray placement, pavers, decking tiles, Astroturf, and the replanting of existing planters.

Scope of Work
1. Demolition
The demolition process included carefully removing all existing green roof material, separation fabrics, irrigation, and hardscape. This was accomplished by utilizing a scaffolding system and careful procedures. Much of the hardscape material was re-used, saving the customers money and lead time.
2. Mobilization
Throughout the demolition and installation potential lane and sidewalk closures to accommodate the crane and tractor trailer were necessary for the removal and delivery of materials. Safety measures, such as hand hoists and equipment for the crew, were installed.
3. Installation of Green Roof Trays
The Green-Grid system allowed for flexibility in placement and quick installation, with tolerances of up to 12 inches in some areas to account for the building’s structural elements.
4. Re-installation of Pavers
The paver installation was carefully planned to align with the rest of the green roof system, providing a durable and functional walking surface for residents.
5. Private Residential Area Work
The team re-installed wood decking tiles per the design, using both new and reused pedestal systems for support. Additionally, Astroturf was laid out according to the design plans, providing an attractive and low-maintenance green space for residents.
6. Clean-up and Demobilization
After completing the installation, Shearon conducted a thorough cleanup of approximately 10,000 square feet of the construction area, ensuring all debris was removed.
