550 Blair Mill Road Office Park

Hardscape Construction/Irrigation Design & Install

Horsham, Pennsylvania

A Montgomery County realty firm needed an outdoor overhaul for their 35-year old office park, and they chose Shearon Environmental for the transformation. Our landscape design team, superintendents and technicians value-engineered the plans and brought the sleek update to life.

One of the key upgrades was the removal of overgrown and declining trees. This would allow for more sunlight to warm up the space and support the health of a variety of annual and perennial plants. The lower growth habit of the new plants in turn allows an enhanced curb view, highlighting the property amenities to prospective tenants.

This multi-phase project spanned more than 6 months and began with the thorough demolition of the courtyard. We took out the old sidewalks and steps, patio, existing pergola, trees and plant material, benches and tables. Our crew proceeded to ammend the onsite soil and fortified it with composted materials to enrich the subsequent plantings. Once the area was clear it was regraded to create a clean, blank slate for construction of the new design.

Our landscape architects designed the Rainbird irrigation system to service multiple plant beds as well as the central waterfall fountian. The extensive hardscape design features wide walks and low seating walls which frame the fountain square and provide inviting common space. Roomy steps add to the ambiance of the space and connect to the new retaining wall at their base. The clean aesthetic carries throughout the site with the conversion of several fading mulch beds at the building’s perimeter to riverstone edging.

The finishing phase saw Shearon’s crews installing a broad array of grasses, shrubs and perennial plants to set off specimen trees such as the Japanese Cutleaf Maple and several large-caliper sweetgums. Paired with carefully placed landscape boulders, these beautiful trees soften the design and promise four seasons of color and interest.

Now complete, the courtyard has already generated renewed interest and enjoyment of the office park and promises a gorgeous reveal as its inagural spring draws near.

The View and Vantage at Temple University

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Landscape/Irrigation Design/Build/Maintain

Shearon Environmental Design has partnered with local developer the Goldenberg Group on dozens of residential and commercial projects in downtown Philadelphia. Working in tandem with the unprecedented revitalization of Temple University’s main campus, the Goldenberg Group unveiled plans to develop two “resort-style” student housing buildings on Cecil B. Moore Avenue. Shearon was selected for landscape installation and maintenance at their first site, The View at Montgomery. The community opened to rave reviews, and was named 16th out of the top 100 student residences in the country by J. Turner Research in 2018.

Phase Two of the master plan saw the addition of a second $199-million mixed-use development, Vantage. Once again, the Goldenberg Group put their confidence in Shearon Environmental Design. Working with an ever-changing schedule and fluctuating deadlines, our Voorhees team still delivered top-notch results.

Our landscape architects began by designing the spaces to sustain a variety of hardy plants that would thrive in the city environment. First impressions are key for visiting potential students and their families, so the site needed to reflect the excitement of the Temple University experience. Over 100 trees and nearly 2500 perennial plants were chosen to provide year-round color and texture. Added to over 550 shrubs and 2,000 groundcover plants, the landscape would complement the buildings and define the spaces surrounding them.

To ensure that the plant material would flourish, we screened, hauled and spread over 600 yards of our own quality topsoil. Using recycled materials reduced project cost while reflecting Shearon’s continuing commitment to green construction. Next our crew installed an extensive state-of-the-art Rainbird™ irrigation system. Wifi controllers relay programming via desktop or mobile adjust watering dates, times, zones and usage. The capacity for real-time offsite monitoring and emergency shutdown allows for both water conservation and protection of landscape investment.

In keeping with our green aesthetic, Shearon incorporated an attractive rain garden into the new parking island. Landscaping the plaza adjacent to Vantage rounded out our work. This common area, designed to highlight 40,000 square feet of retail space, combines roomy lawn with sculptural seating to provide an inviting social setting that is also safe and well-lit.

The View at Montgomery and Vantage projects allowed our team to combine practicality and creativity in a marquee setting, and Shearon is proud to have been a part of them.

The Irvine

Site Excavation/Remediation

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Shearon Environmental Design has enjoyed a dynamic partnership with Philadelphia-based Post Brothers for over a decade. We have been fortunate to be part of their transformative vision for urban multi-family living, and The Irvine project offered us a complex and challenging opportunity for the radical rehabilitation of a neglected area.

The building in the University City section of West Philadelphia has seen many uses in its 100-year history. As the neighborhood grew both above and below ground the area’s footprint became irregular and more complex. The 15-month project began with the removal of several tons of concrete, plant material, fencing and assorted debris. Safe operation of the heavy demolition and cleanup equipment used was Shearon’s top priority, and our experienced crew met each new challenge with ingenuity and determination.

Rebuilding the site’s infrastructure, Shearon’s crews excavated for and installed the underground stormwater management system. Our ICPI-certified hardscape installation technicians built the 60’ retaining wall, then created the common area courtyard and several private patios using E.P. Henry Eco-Cobble porous pavers. Shearon also installed individual porcelain pavers for the grill area flooring.

To enhance curb appeal and soften the building’s industrial lines, our planting crew added Valley Forge Elms to the front sidewalk. These hardy, disease-resistant trees are among the best for use as street trees because their mature size won’t interfere with overhead power lines.

Creative integration of popular amenities was the theme throughout the site, including community garden plots installed at the end of the common area deck. Irvine residents will be able to personalize them with their own flowers and vegetables while gathering with neighbors in the safe, well-lit area. Dogs can join the festivities as well thanks to a clean, secure dog park.

The Irvine Apartments provide a wealth of opportunities to enjoy outdoor life in an urban setting, and Shearon Environmental Design is proud to have been a part of bringing them to life.

Piazza Pod Park, Mixed-Use Outdoor Space

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Sitework, Stonework, Landscape Installation

When powerhouse Philadelphia developer Post Brothers envisioned
an innovative “pop-up park” adjacent to their Piazza apartment homes
they turned to trusted partner Shearon Environmental Design to help build
it. The Piazza Pod Park would be a truly original multi-use retail and
restaurant space constructed from repurposed shipping containers.
A singular entertainment venue, the park would host a variety of festivals
and performances in the newly vibrant Northern Liberties section of the

Shearon was there from the ground up. We began with electrical
trenching and cleanup sitework. In order to create plant beds in the barren
urban lot, we excavated 10” of material and replaced it with high-quality
topsoil. All plantings had to stand up to the challenges of heavy foot traffic
and an abundance of direct sun. We chose a hardy blend of Yucca, Stonecrop,
Blue Oat Grass and Hens & Chicks – similar to the one we had installed at
Presidential City, another flagship Post Brothers property. Our designers
also added trees to give the space height and visual interest.

The clean, modern aesthetic of the park is complemented by a palette of
stones. We installed various gravels with metal edging to frame walkways
and fill common areas, and a base of large-diameter riverstone to support
the iconic “Bebot” sculpture at the park’s entrance. Welcoming visitors with
a cheery wave, the “Bebot” embodies the park’s artsy vibe and has become
a go-to selfie spot.

This summer saw the venue become a buzz-worthy Philadelphia attraction.
Additionally, the Piazza Pod Park by Post Brothers has been named the
2019 Commercial Project Transformation of the Year by GlobeSt. We at
Shearon Environmental Design are proud to be contributers and to have
partnered again with one of the city’s most high-profile builders.

Intensive & Extensive Green Roof Installation

One Ardmore Place, Ardmore, PA

Rooftop Garden, Custom Irrigation, Green Walls

When Harkins Builders needed a top-notch team for a complex green roof install, they turned to Shearon Environmental Design. Working with tight deadlines through winter weather, Shearon leveraged multiple crews to work simultaneously on the 4th floor Intensive Green Roof, the 5th floor Extensive Green Roof and the parking garage Green Walls. 75 tons of lightweight aggregate were carried up by the craneload. Over 250 cubic yards of lightweight soil were installed via Finn 705 blower. Shearon’s company-owned heavy equipment and rigorous safety protocols ensured a smooth and safe process.

One of the highlights of this project was the challenge of putting together a custom-built autofill irrigation system. Shearon’s technicians collaborated on the design work to implement a unique system that maintains a constant reserve of 2″ of rainwater, automatically adding water from below as needed for optimum growing conditions.

In addition to the irrigation systems on the 4th and 5th floor roofs, Shearon also fitted the high-rise parking garage with 42 irrigated planter boxes. Filled with honeysuckle vines supported by grid trellises, these little green walls provide beauty and privacy for neighbors inside and out.

The 5th floor Extensive Green Roof that Shearon installed is sedum-covered. This moss provides natural insulation, reducing heating and cooling costs. Green Roofs are also effective for stormwater management. These benefits, coupled with tax credits and environmental advantages like air filtration and aesthetics grow from a true Green Build ethic. Shearon Environmental Design is proud to have been chosen as a partner for this work.

Model Home Outdoor Living Patio & Grounds

Great Valley Crossing Toll Brothers Model Home

Outdoor kitchens are the crown jewel of today’s luxury homes. When Toll Brothers needed to put their best foot forward with their Great Valley Crossing model home, they returned to our team at Shearon Environmental to design and build a sumptuous outdoor space sure to entice and inspire potential homebuyers.

Our certified landscape architects rose to the challenge, creating a plan to showcase options for maximum impervious coverage with a 400 sq ft patio and custom grill station. Shearon builders used only genuine EP Henry materials to create the double-pier curved seating wall, patio floor, firepit and paving. A sleek, custom outdoor granite countertop serves as a bar and meal prep area. Integrated Alliance LED lighting provides an inviting glow for entertaining after dusk.

Optimizing the slim window between general construction schedule and opening day, Shearon’s planting crews brought the surrounding area to life in record time. The rich landscape palette included over two dozen types of flowering, ornamental and perennial plants to deliver year-round interest and beauty. Robust turf supported by a comprehensive irrigation system completed the transformation.

Parking Area Enhancement

Parking Area Enhancement

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

A Pennsylvania developer needed an upscale makeover for his commercial lot, and he called on us at Shearon Environmental Design. Our team of Certified Landscape Architects began by creating a custom planting plan to maximize curb appeal and budget parameters. Since our construction projects are run with Shearon-owned equipment and certified employee operators, we delivered a safe and worry-free process.

Our team excavated over 200 cubic yards of asphalt and subsoil in multiple locations. After preparing the site, we installed Belgian block curbing. This popular material lends the area an instant aesthetic boost, enticing desirable tenants and shoppers.

Southwark Pavilion

Luxury Townhome Pavilion

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Shearon Environmental Design was invited to cooperate with D3 Real Estate Development to bring to life this urban oasis in the heart of historic Philadelphia. Throughout the transformation, we provided streamlined communication and seamless transition between project phases.

Our design team, headed by certified landscape architects, began with a comprehensive review of the supplied shop drawings. Shearon’s recommendations were adopted in order to provide the project with optimal functionality and value.

Next our construction crew set to work on the excavation, grading and remediation of the area. Shearon’s ICPI certified hardscape craftsmen built the walkways, curbs and riverstone aprons. The highlight of this phase was installation of a custom bluestone terrace, which would add a lovely focal point as well as an inviting social space.

Completing the design Shearon’s professional landscape team planted a carefully chosen blend of greenery. Our selection of predominately native perennials paired with river birch and dogwood would ensure that this hardy landscape will deliver year-round beauty and delight residents for years to come.

Herbst Field Complex Renovation – Pipersville, PA

Athletic Field Reconfiguration

Pipersville, Pennsylvania

Shearon Environmental Design is pleased to be expanding our relationship with the Central Bucks Athletic Association (CBAA) at the Herbst Field Complex. Though we’ve maintained the 30-acre athletic complex for some time, this was the first collaboration between Shearon Sports and Shearon Civil Engineering for CBAA.

Tailored to the evolving needs of the organization, the Master Plan was designed to maximize the flexibility and playability of the Herbst Field Complex. This Master Plan was refined by our in-house Landscape Architects and Civil Engineers to comply with Township, County and State regulations. The focus for the 2017 phase was creating versatility of use through renovation of the rear fields. Four fields on four separate planes were regraded to one plane. This allows the entire area to be utilized in a variety of field configurations.

To increase playability over one and a half miles of drainage pipe were installed along with a 26-zone irrigation system. Once on grade over 230,000 sq ft of sod was laid creating a professional playing surface that would be the envy of any high school or college Athletic Department.

From pee-wee to high school club teams, soccer to lacrosse, the athletes and coaches of the Central Bucks Athletic Association now enjoy the flexibility of the upgraded Herbst Field complex and the opportunity to configure their fields for any age, sport or tournament need.

Abington Friends School Paver Patio Installation – Abington, PA

Patio Installation

Abington, Pennsylvania

We at Shearon Environmental Design are pleased to unveil one of our newest hardscape design/build projects, a paver patio for Abington Friends School.

When Abington Friends looked to us to design a new outdoor gathering space there were certain design concerns that needed to be addressed with that existing area of campus.
There were drainage issues that had water pooling on the existing walkways during and after rain events which led to safety and usability concerns. Additionally, there were dated amenities and landscaping that were in need of rehabilitation.

Our team designed a usable space for outside gathering that had previously been missing at the school, as well as a new landscape design to complement the 1,424 square foot paver patio.  E.P. Henry 12”x12” Village Square Pavers were installed on a compacted stone base and sand leveling medium using ICPI (Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute) standards. There is an 18” high, 32 linear ft. long E.P. Henry Double-Sided Coventry Wall Block Wall with (2) 2’ x 2’ Coventry Wall Pillars to end each side of the wall.

The finished paver patio has now held countless gatherings of students, parents, and alumni, and is a highlight of our Design/Build ethos.
