Redesign Of Softball Field

Eastern University approached Sheaon about the redesign of their softball field after it was destroyed by a flood.  After a thorough site analysis, the softball field was redesigned with the infield relocated to the other side of the site taking it out of the flood plain.  Once concept plans were approved, construction and permit plans were prepared including grading, drainage, erosion control and irrigation.  Shearon also assisted on the design of the dugouts, backstop, and fencing.

Once approved, Shearon’s construction and agronomy team took over.  The bulk of the project was implemented through a very wet winter, stripping topsoil, regrading the field, relocating a sewer line, and adding in a retaining wall that doubles as a platform for bleachers.  As winter broke, finish work could be completed including:

  • Laser grading

  • Relocated a sewer line

  • Regraded the field to provide proper slopes

  • Installed 1800 linear feet of subsurface drainage

  • Installed irrigation system

  • Warning track

  • 30,000 square feet of sod

  • Bullpen and batting cage construction

As a result of Shearon’s ability to put multiple crews on the project at one time, the field was completed in time for opening day.

As the softball field was finishing, Shearon rebuilt the baseball infield, correcting slopes and adding drainage, allowing the field to be used more quickly after rain events.  Finally, Shearon added two full size batting cages and rebuilt the bullpens on the baseball field.
